The way we deal with slag these days just isn't the same.

I was cleaning up the shop the other day and got to thinking about how we used to deal with slag. Back in the day, we'd just scoop it out with a long ladle and dump it in the pit. It was messy, sure, but it was fast. Now with all the environmental regs, we have to use this sealed container system that takes forever to set up. Last week, I spent half an hour just getting the container aligned, and by then, the metal had cooled too much. It slows everything down, and I miss how easy it was. Sometimes I wonder if all this extra hassle is really worth it when we're just trying to get the job done.

Ever notice how a lot of stuff that used to be simple gets more complicated once we see the mess it made? Feels like we're always cleaning up the easy way of doing things from twenty years ago, just slower and with more steps.

Man, I get that feeling completely. I was just reading about how much those old slag pits messed up the ground water near some old foundries, like for decades after. It's wild to think about the long term cost of that "easy" way. I still hate how much everything slows down now too, but I guess that's the trade off.

My friend's well water is still brown from that.
