Showerthought: I just wasted $50 on a 'rust converter' spray for a piece of driftwood I found at the beach, and it completely RUINED the natural texture.
I thought it would protect the wood, but it left this weird, shiny plastic-like coating that you can't sand off, so has anyone found a better way to preserve found wood without changing how it looks and feels?

Okay, "learned the hard way" is a bit harsh. That stuff is literally for rusty metal, so it's going to act like a sealant. For driftwood, you want something that soaks in. I've had good luck just using a few coats of clear, matte water-based polyurethane. It soaks right into the grain and doesn't leave that plastic shell if you use thin coats. You have to brush it on, though, spraying usually gives you that weird coating.

Guess you learned the hard way not to trust a product named after a chemical reaction.
