I tried making a sculpture from old plastic bottles versus rusty gears I found at the old train yard.
The plastic stuff just looked like a sad pile of trash, but the gears had real weight and history that made the whole piece feel solid. After that, I only pick up metal or wood objects with a clear past life. What's the most interesting material you've ever built something from?

Old leather is a good one. It has a worn-in texture and smell that new stuff can't fake. Found a discarded horse saddle once that became a whole wall piece.

But what about the mold and rot? I had an old leather jacket from a thrift store that looked cool until I saw the green spots inside. That saddle on your wall might be fine, but some of that old stuff is just falling apart. The smell can turn from nice to nasty real fast.
