Swapped to an NES Zapper for Duck Hunt after using a knockoff light gun for years

Found my old NES at my uncle's place in Detroit and tried the official Zapper versus the off-brand one I grew up with. The knockoff missed ducks CONSTANTLY while the real one hit 90% of the time. Anyone else try a cheap accessory and think it was fine until you tried the real thing?

I read somewhere that those third party light guns used cheaper photodiodes that were way less sensitive to the CRT's refresh rate. The Zapper was tuned for exactly that timing, so it makes sense yours missed so much.

Cheaper photodiodes" maybe, but I bet your knockoff just needed a good cleaning and some fresh solder. I had a third party gun that worked perfect for years until my cat knocked it off a shelf. People hype up the official Zapper but they had their own issues too, like the cord being way too short if you didn't sit right in front of the TV.
