Unpopular opinion: Should you fix a game console with cheap parts from eBay or spend the money on OEM replacements?

Last week I swapped out the disc drive belt in my old PS1 with a $2 generic from eBay and it worked fine for 3 days before slipping again, but my buddy swears by paying $15 for the real Sony part and says cheap stuff always fails, so has anyone here actually done a side-by-side test on which lasts longer?

Oh absolutely, I learned that lesson the hard way too with a cheap power supply for my GameCube that started buzzing after a week. I've had much better luck spending the extra cash on the real parts, they just hold up way longer in my experience.

Has anyone checked if the cheap belt is actually the exact same size or just "close enough"? I've found that generics sometimes work great if you match the specs perfectly but fail fast if they're a millimeter off.
