TIL that not setting posts in concrete might actually be better...

Just finished a backyard fence where I used gravel for drainage instead of concrete. The owner freaked out, saying it wouldn't stay up. A year later, it's solid as a rock and handles freeze-thaw cycles way better. All my buddies in the trade swear by concrete and think I'm nuts... But I've seen too many rotted posts from moisture trapped in concrete. So I'm sticking with gravel, even if nobody else does.

ruin a house" seems a bit much for a fence post lol. it's not like the whole thing collapses if one method is a little different.

Home repairs are full of old rules people follow just because that's how it's always been done.

Honestly, a lot of those old rules come from safety needs and lessons learned over years. Like with plumbing, certain ways to seal joints prevent leaks that could ruin a house. Those methods have worked for decades for a REASON. Changing them without knowing why can cause more harm than good.
