Had to dig 12 post holes by hand because my auger broke down

Last week I got a call to put up 150 feet of privacy fence in Rocky Mount, and my power auger seized up after the second hole. Ended up spending 8 hours with a clamshell digger and a digging bar to finish all 12 holes in rocky clay soil. Has anyone found a reliable way to get through tough ground without wrecking your back?

Hit two rocks and a pipe before giving up and renting a mini excavator.

Man, that sounds brutal. I think I'd rather take a beating than dig 12 holes in rocky clay, honestly. @the_simon, you're probably better off renting a mini ex than messing with a clamshell digger and ending up like a pretzel the next day.
