Just read that Tolkien's original Middle-earth map was drawn on a single sheet of exam paper from 1936.

Found it in a footnote of a library book about fantasy art history. Blew my mind. All that detail, the whole world, on something he probably had lying around. Makes my big tablet and fancy software feel a bit extra. Anyone else have a favorite 'low tech' map story from an author or artist?

Yeah that "single sheet of exam paper" thing is everywhere now, like how the best recipes are always on a stained notecard from your grandma.

Maybe we just like the story more than the actual advice.

Oh that's such a perfect way to put it. It makes me wonder why we trust those simple, worn-out things more than a fancy new manual. Is it just the feeling that someone already did the hard work of figuring out what actually matters?
