Celebrating a new habit: oil recycling in our elevator shop

I've always hated seeing good oil go to waste. So last year, I got a few bins for used hydraulic oil. It was a tough sell at first, guys thought it was extra work. But I explained how easy it is. Now, we collect it all and a company picks it up to refine. Just heard back that we saved 300 gallons from the dump this quarter. That's like keeping a small lake clean. Feels pretty good to make a difference, even in a small way. Plus, the boss is happy with the lower costs.

My uncle ran a garage and his back lot was just a graveyard of old oil barrels. They looked so messy until the county started a pickup program.

Did the pickup program lead to any new rules for garages, @the_hugo? Cleanups like that often push towns to make better laws. I bet your uncle's place looked way better after!

Garages got hit with new fines if they left barrels outside more than a week. The county also made them use those special sealed containers for used oil. It forced a lot of places to finally clean up their act. My uncle had to rent a dumpster and it cost him a pretty penny. Totally worth it though, because now his lot doesn't look like a toxic waste site.
