PSA: A ceiling patch turned into a 3-hour geometry lesson

I had a simple repair in a bathroom where a light fixture was moved, leaving a 10-inch square hole. The homeowner had leftover board, but it was cut at a 45-degree angle on one side for some reason. I figured I could just trim it, but every cut I made seemed to make the gap weirder. My helper and I spent over three hours with a T-square and a rasp trying to get a piece to fit that stupid hole. We finally got it by cutting a whole new piece from a fresh sheet. Anyone else ever get completely owned by a simple patch job?

My last patch job made me question if I even understood how rectangles work.

Feel your pain, @the_sean. I once measured a window three times and still cut the trim an inch short. Rectangles are supposed to be simple, but they fight back when you're holding a saw.
