My old foreman said to always use a 10 inch knife for the second coat, and I finally get it

For years I used a 12 inch, thinking bigger was better and faster. He kept telling me a 10 inch gives you more control and a flatter finish, but I just brushed it off. Then I got a job doing high end work in Scottsdale where the light shows every little wave. I switched to the 10 inch like he said, and man, the difference is real. My finish coats are way smoother now and I'm not fighting the mud as much. Anyone else have a tool size tip that seemed small but made a big change?

My dad swore by a 4 inch putty knife for taping inside corners, not a 6. I thought it was just his old school way. Tried it on a remodel last month and it locks into the corner so much better, way less cleanup.
