Finally got the hang of reading that tricky river bottom on the Klamath
After three weeks of fighting it, I finally matched the pump sound to the actual gravel density on a stretch near Happy Camp. It clicked when the old-timer running the barge next to me yelled over, 'Listen for the gravel, not the rocks!' Anyone have a good trick for sandy silt that just won't hold suction?

That old-timer gave you bad advice. Listening for gravel over rocks is a sure way to lose your prime on that exact stretch. I ran that Happy Camp spot for years and the trick is actually the opposite, you have to tune out the gravel chatter completely. For sandy silt, just crank your RPMs way down, almost to a stall.
