Spent all weekend fixing my layer disaster on a commercial plan

A client asked for major revisions after I thought the draft was done. I learned the hard way that my layer organization was a total mess, and it took forever to find everything. What's your best tip for keeping layers clean from day one?

My buddy still uses his old AIM screenname for some logins. Watching him type it out, his whole hand cringes halfway through the word. He always deletes it right after.
