Just realized my isometric drawings look flat no matter what I do
I've been trying to draft isometric views for a simple gear housing, but they always seem to lack depth. I've played around with the axis lines and shading, but it still looks off to me. Maybe it's just me, but how do you guys make isometric drawings feel more three-dimensional?

Is it the line weights you're using that might be the issue? I mean, I've had the same problem where my isometric stuff just looks kinda flat no matter what. Idk, maybe it's just me, but adding a bit of darker shading on the sides facing away from the light can help a lot. You could also try making lines thicker for parts that are supposed to be closer to you. Playing with how strong your shadows are might make things feel more solid. It really is a tricky thing to get right, but keep tweaking it and you'll see progress.

Oh man, my buddy struggled with that exact thing for weeks.

Have you tried overlapping parts in your drawing? Putting some pieces in front of others tricks the eye into seeing depth. It's a simple fix that often works.
