Dropped $180 on a digital caliper and it paid for itself in one job

Bought a Mitutoyo digital caliper last month for a custom kitchen cabinet layout I was drafting. The old dial caliper I had was off by 1/32nd on a critical measurement, and the new one caught it before I cut anything. Anyone else find that spending a little more on measuring tools actually saves you money in the end?

Gonna have to disagree here. I've been using a $40 iGaging caliper for like 5 years now and it's never been off by that much. Dropping $180 on one seems like overkill unless you're doing like aerospace work or something. A quality check with a set of gauge blocks or even a known good part wouldve caught that 1/32 error for way less money.

And honestly even a $40 caliper can drift over time especially if you drop it or it gets dusty. The thing about Mitutoyo is the consistency stays rock solid for years which is worth it when you're dealing with cabinet reveals that have to be dead on. If you're doing high end trim work where 1/64th actually matters the peace of mind alone is worth the extra cash.
