My dollar store glue gun project took 4 hours longer than I planned

I tried making a fake stone planter out of foam board and hot glue from the dollar store, thinking it would take like 2 hours. Ended up fighting with glue strings and melted foam for 6 hours before it looked halfway decent. Has anyone else found a trick to keep dollar store hot glue from getting too runny?

Grabbed a cheap glue gun from like a gas station once and it just sputtered plastic everywhere, total waste of time. What @felix_coleman87 said about lower temps makes sense, I tried that with a different dollar store brand and it still clumped up. Maybe just switching to a name brand gun is the way to go, the whole experience was pretty frustrating.

My buddy tried the same thing and said he kept cranking the glue gun temp down low, almost to where it barely melts. He told me it helped a little but the glue still got everywhere. He finally just gave up and bought a cheap name brand gun from a craft store.
