Just realized I was using way too much paint on those cheap clay pots from the dollar bin

I spent three hours layering paint on a set of six pots last week and only figured out after they peeled that you're supposed to do one thin coat and let it dry, not glob it on like I was frosting a cake.

A whole 3 hours on 6 cheap pots though? Seems like a lot of time for something that costs maybe $2. Pretty sure dollar store clay is more about the fun of it than making a masterpiece that lasts forever.

Oh man, I feel you on the "glob it on like frosting a cake" thing. I did the exact same thing with a big terracotta planter last spring and ended up with these horrible drips that looked like paint tears. Something that helped me a ton was using those cheap foam brushes instead of bristle ones because they don't hold as much paint and force you to go lighter. Also, if you haven't tried it yet, sanding the pots just a little bit with fine grit paper before you paint makes a world of difference for the peeling problem. I learned that the hard way when half my design flaked off after two weeks on the porch. Just a light scuffing is all you need, nothing crazy.
