My uncle swore by using deck screws for drywall and I called him an idiot for 2 years
He kept saying coarse thread drywall screws are weak and I'd regret it. I finally tried his way when I hung 20 sheets last spring in my garage. Not a single popped head or sagging board after 8 months. Has anyone else had an old timer's advice actually beat the standard stuff?

Not a SINGLE popped head or sagging board after 8 months"? That's WILD. I've been hanging drywall for like 10 years and I always use the standard coarse threads because that's just what you DO. But honestly your uncle might be onto something. Deck screws are way beefier and that extra bite into the studs probably holds way better than those skinny drywall screws that snap if you look at them wrong. I'm actually kind of shook right now because I've talked so much trash about people using deck screws for drywall. Maybe I owe my own uncle an apology.

Man yeah I had the exact same wake up call like a year ago. My buddy whos been framing for 20 years told me to try deck screws on a ceiling job and I laughed at him. Then I actually tried it on a bathroom remodel out of spite and honestly I felt like an idiot for not doing it sooner. Those cheap drywall screws strip out so easy and half the time the head just snaps off if you hit it at the wrong angle. The deck screws cost a little more but I swear I didnt have to go back and fix a single board after I switched.
