Found out my paint roller technique was backwards after 5 years

I've been painting rooms since 2019 and always rolled up and down in straight lines. Last weekend, my dad watched me do the hallway in our 1920s bungalow in Portland and asked why I wasn't doing a W pattern. Tried it on a second coat and the coverage was way more even, no more visible roller marks. Has anyone else had a basic method click way later than it should?

The whole “no more visible roller marks” part hit home for me. I did the same thing for years, straight up and down just like you, and always wondered why the walls looked streaky no matter how careful I was. Then I helped my buddy repaint his kitchen and he showed me the W pattern, but honestly the real trick for me was also not reloading the roller too much. Once I got that lazy load and a consistent W going, it was like night and day. Felt kind of dumb that something so basic took me that long to figure out too.
