My neighbor laughed at my 15 second pre-infusion so I cut it down to 8 seconds
Tasted way better espresso afterward with a $5 Amazon dosing funnel I got on sale, has anyone else gotten feedback that made them totally change their routine?

Oh, 15 seconds is actually pretty normal for some light roasts, 8 sounds more like a middle ground. That dosing funnel probably helped your puck prep way more than changing your pre-infusion though.

Yeah, that "middle ground" thing... I get what you're saying but honestly I had a bag of Ethiopian beans once that threw everything out the window. I was messing with pre-infusion times for weeks and my shots kept coming out sour no matter what I did. Turned out my grinder was just drifting off calibration from the humidity that summer. Fixed that and suddenly 12 seconds tasted perfect. It's funny how we chase these tiny adjustments when sometimes the problem is something totally different like your burrs being a little off. Makes you wonder how much time we waste tweaking the wrong variable...

Heard once that puck prep matters more than timing - sounds like that funnel proved it.
