My grinder setting wandered off and I didn't notice for 2 weeks

I keep my dose at 18g and my old hand grinder has a ring that slips if you don't crank it down tight. Last month in Phoenix I did a pull and it ran 14 seconds, way too fast, but I just shrugged and drank it anyway. Turns out the ring had loosened by like 3 full numbers and my shots were all sour and watery the whole time. I finally taped the ring with a bit of electrical tape and marked the spot with a silver sharpie, now I check it every morning. Anyone else had a grinder setting sneak away on them, or am I the only one who ignores the taste until it's brutal?
