Update: My Xbox 360 red ring fix went sideways at a friend's house

I was at my buddy's place in Cincinnati trying the towel trick on his 360 that red-ringed. Wrapped it in a towel, ran it for 15 minutes to reflow the solder, you know the old fix. It actually worked for a second, then the whole console just shut off and wouldn't turn back on. I think we cooked something else inside. Has anyone else had a temporary fix completely kill a system? What's the real way to fix the red ring now?

That towel trick is basically a last-ditch heat gun method without control. You probably overheated a capacitor or another component next to the GPU. The proper fix is still a controlled reflow with proper tools, but at this point the board might be toast.

My old Xbox 360 got the towel treatment back in 2009, so I feel this. @seanh91 is right, it's basically just baking your console in a panic.
