Appreciation post: cleaning a 360 with a toothbrush and q-tips actually fixed my red ring
Everyone on the forums told me to reflow the board or buy a new console when my Xbox 360 gave me the red ring of death last month. I pulled the heatsinks, scrubbed off 12 years of dust with an old toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol, swapped the thermal paste for some Arctic Silver 5, and it has been running Halo 3 for two solid weeks now. Has anyone else fixed a red ring just with cleaning, or did I get lucky?
My cousin's 360 red ringed back in 2011 and he swore the towel trick worked for like three months before it died for good. That trick basically cooks the board though, so your cleaning job is way smarter since dust buildup is what causes most of the overheating in the first place. Twelve years of gunk in those heatsinks is no joke, you probably added years to that thing.
