TIL how my cat's nap sparked my character art
I was drawing on my tablet when I saw my cat curled up on the couch. Its pose made me think of new ways to arrange characters in my art. What everyday stuff gives you creative jumps?

Honestly this "my cat's nap gave me ideas" stuff sounds like luck. Relying on random stuff like a pet's sleeping position seems like a great way to never finish anything. Real creative work comes from just doing the boring stuff, like studying composition rules or doing gesture drawing drills. Waiting for the world to give you a spark means you'll be waiting forever. I get way more from forcing myself to sketch for an hour than hoping my dog does something cute.

See, what if it's not about waiting for luck but about setting up your brain to catch those random moments? Like, I do my gesture drills every day, but I also keep a sketchbook by the window where my bird feeder is. When a sparrow does a weird hop, I jot it down, and later it becomes a character's walk cycle. The boring practice gives me the skills to use the spark when it happens, so they feed each other.

My dog's weird habit of sleeping upside down gave me a pose for a comic panel last month. Those random moments don't replace daily drawing practice, but they add life to it. If I only did drills, my characters would look like practice sketches, not real people. Setting up routines to catch everyday sparks is what makes art feel alive, not just done by the book.
