My Wacom pen died mid commission at 2am and I finished the piece with a potato
So last Thursday I was finishing up a big digital piece for a client, a full character illustration with like 14 layers of shading, and it was due Friday morning. Around 2am my Wacom pen just quit on me, no warning, nothing. I panicked because the client already paid half upfront and I'm sitting in my apartment in Phoenix with no backup stylus. Then I remembered this stupid joke my roommate made about using a potato as a stylus, and I was tired enough to actually try it. I cut a potato in half, stuck it on the tablet, and somehow it moved the cursor, so I spent the next hour and a half doing fine detail work with a raw potato and my finger. The shading on the left arm looks a little weird but honestly the client never noticed. Has anyone else had their stylus die at the worst possible time, and what did you actually do to finish the job?
Lowkey that potato thing is funny but the part that bugs me is you just shipping work you knew was off and hoping the client wouldn't catch it. Half upfront or not, if I turn in a piece with shading I'm not happy with I'd rather message the client, tell them the truth, and ask for a day or two. Most people are fine with it if you just say something instead of rolling the dice. I've had a pen die on me too and the first thing I did was text the client, not grab a spud. Saves you the stress of wondering if they'll notice the weird arm later.
