I finally stopped hiding my messy layers in my digital paintings

For about two years, I would always merge my layers as soon as a section looked 'done' because I hated the visual clutter. Last month, I was working on a character portrait with 80+ layers and got completely lost trying to fix the eye color. Now I just label everything clearly and use layer groups, even if the file looks chaotic. It saves me at least an hour of rework on every piece. How do you all keep your process organized without slowing down?

Read a blog post from a concept artist who colors their layer folders. Red for base colors, blue for lighting, green for effects. That visual cue helps find things fast without reading every label.

Wow, I was a total merge-everything guy before this.

Yeah, that "merge everything" phase hits hard. I used to flatten files into one giant mess, then spend an hour hunting for one tiny line. Pat's tip about color coding folders is a lifesaver for that.
