That fuel additive I laughed at actually saved my injectors

I had a 2006 Freightliner Cascadia that was running rough around 350k miles and a guy at the shop in Nashville told me to try Opti-Lube XPD. I figured it was snake oil but figured what the heck since a injector replacement would run me $2,400. After two tanks with it the stutter at idle cleared up and my fuel mileage went up by almost 1 mpg. Anyone else had this kind of result with fuel additives or did I just get lucky?

Not surprised honestly. I've seen the same thing with Opti-Lube on a couple of older trucks in my fleet that were getting finicky around that mileage. The cetane boost and lubricity probably cleaned up some light deposits that were causing the stumble. If it keeps running smooth after a few more tanks you dodged a bullet on those injectors.

Oh man, that's so true. It's like how people forget that sometimes the simplest fix is the best. I see it all the time, like with my own car. I was having this weird vibration at highway speeds, and everyone was telling me it was a transmission mount or a bad wheel bearing. Turns out I just had some mud caked inside one of the wheels from driving down a dirt road. Cleaned it out and it was smooth as butter. It's the same with computers, where people will reinstall the whole operating system when clearing the cache or deleting a few temporary files would do the trick. Everyone jumps to the worst-case scenario first, but a little bit of maintenance goes a long way before you start throwing parts at it.
