Serious question, why do guys torque oil drain plugs to 60 ft lbs and crack the pan
Had a 2016 Cummins come in Monday with a stripped drain plug because the last shop hit it with an impact instead of a torque wrench. The spec is 22 ft lbs and it takes thirty extra seconds to do it right, so there is no good reason for it. Any of you had to pull a pan on a customer truck because of someone else's lazy plug job?
Man, the impact gun thing drives me up a wall. I watched a guy at a quick lube joint rattle a plug on a Duramax till it spun free, then he just shrugged and sent it out the door with a dab of RTV. Customer came back two weeks later with a puddle in his driveway and we had to drop the pan for a new one. Thirty seconds with a torque wrench would've saved him a four hundred dollar job. There's zero excuse when the spec is printed right there on the pan or in the manual. Some folks just think tighter equals better and it never does.
