My kid asked me why diesel engines sound angry and it made me think
He said it sounds like a giant grumpy robot, and I realized I'd stopped hearing the noise as anything but normal. What's a simple way you explain what we do to people who don't know the trade?

Ever try to explain your job and just end up sounding like a confused robot? That's me trying to describe a timing belt.

Know what you mean. Trying to explain a diesel knock to my neighbor, I just ended up making weird chunk-chunk noises with my mouth.
