Appreciation post: my 71 year old neighbor watched me set injector lash and asked why I was "petting the engine"
Tried explaining that the feeler gauge drag is how you know it's right, and he says his old man just did it by ear on a 12 valve and never burned a cam in 300k miles. Now I'm second guessing every click I've ever trusted, anyone here actually tune lash by sound alone?
Man, the old timers were just built different. My grandpa did the same thing on tractor engines and claimed his hand could feel four thousandths through a wrench. Here's the thing though, and this is what got me thinking after reading your post: that feel isn't some magic gift, it's thousands of reps. The drag on the feeler gauge and the sound of a properly set valve are teaching you the same thing, just through different senses. The ear guys weren't guessing, they had a baseline burned into their brain from years of doing it wrong and hearing what wrong sounds like. So you're not second guessing the click, you're just early in building the library that guy already had.
