My cousin swore by a 1963 atlas for directions, we ended up 40 miles off

Last summer my cousin insisted we use his grandpa's 1963 road atlas for a trip to Asheville because he said new GPS lies. The map still showed US 19 as a main route that's been closed since the 80s. We drove into a dead end near a quarry and wasted 2 hours backtracking to I-40. I get the charm of old maps, but has anyone else tried actually navigating with one and lived to tell about it?
