A retired cartographer at the Spokane map fair spent 20 minutes roasting my 1952 Alaskan globe
I brought a 1952 Replogle globe to the Spokane map fair last Saturday thinking it was a solid find, and this retired cartographer named Walt picked it up and just started laughing. He pointed out that the globe shows Alaska as a territory, not a state, even though it was made three years after Alaska became a state in 1959, which means the company was selling outdated inventory for YEARS. Then he flipped it and showed me the coastline of Antarctica was drawn as one solid blob with no bays or peninsulas at all. He said map makers in the 50s just guessed at half of Antarctica and printed it anyway. I paid $40 for that globe and now I can't look at it without seeing all the lazy shortcuts. Does anyone else have a map or globe where the dates on the label don't match what's actually drawn on it?
So Walt is roasting a 70 year old globe for not having future info? Alaska's state date came 3 years after yours was made, so how is that lazy? The man is holding a piece of history and grading it like a school paper... The Antarctic thing is fair though, they really did just draw whatever back then.
