Why does everyone love those microfiber towels for drying gear? I gave up after 3 tries

I've been using a plain cotton t-shirt to dry my camera lenses and it works fine, no lint, no fuss. Tried a popular microfiber brand in Denver last summer, it left streaks and picked up every bit of dust in my bag. Has anyone else found a non-microfiber option that actually holds up daily?

Cotton t-shirts "work fine" until they don't, and you'll find out the hard way when a tiny piece of lint scratches your lens coating. Those streaks you saw weren't the microfiber's fault, they were from the leftover dust and oils on your gear that the towel was actually picking up. A t-shirt just smears that stuff around, hiding it until you're editing photos and see spots. Microfiber traps particles in the weave, that's the whole point. And as for Denver dust, any cloth is gonna catch that, at least microfiber can be washed and reset, a cotton tee just holds onto it forever. Sounds like you got a cheap brand or a rough one, not the real deal.
