Waterproof phone pouch failed at Alki Beach, keys got soaked too

Took the kids to Alki Beach last Saturday and strapped my phone and keys in that $12 waterproof pouch I've carried for months. Waves hit me sideways during a photo attempt and the seal popped open, phone got saltwater and the car fob died on the spot. Tow truck cost $85 and the phone needed a new charging port. Anyone else had a pouch fail mid-use or am I just unlucky with the clip style closures?
