Vent: my bank's fraud line asked for my SSN before I even said why I was calling
Got a call last month from a number that showed up as my actual bank, and the guy on the line asked me to confirm my full Social Security number in the first 30 seconds. I hung up and called the number on the back of my card instead, and the real rep told me that scam calls spoofing bank numbers went up 40% in my state last year. What got me is how normal it sounded, no hold music weirdness, no accent, just a guy who knew my last four digits. Now I just hang up and dial the card number, has anyone else had one of these get close to working on them?
Tbh banks have been asking for SSN verification on inbound calls for years, that's not automatically a scam. If you call them, sure, they can verify you other ways, but when they call you about possible fraud they need to confirm they're talking to the right person before they spill any account info. Think about it from their side, if they didn't verify who they were talking to, anyone could call up pretending to be you and get your balance or freeze your card. The spoofing thing is real, no question, but hanging up on every bank call means you might miss an actual fraud alert and get stuck with charges you could've stopped. The move is to hang up and call back on the card number, which you already do, so you're fine either way.
