Hot take: My credit score jumped 48 points after a random call with a bank teller

I was at my local Chase branch in Austin last month paying off a store card and this older teller asked me why I keep applying for new cards. She said every inquiry drops my score for 6 months even if I get approved. So I stopped applying for anything for 90 days and my score went from 682 to 730. Has anyone else seen this kind of jump just by sitting still?

Nah, inquiries barely matter after a month, your score went up because you stopped carrying balances.

Keep telling myself that every time I check my credit and see a random dip I can't explain. I swear my credit score has its own mood swings, one day it's up ten points for breathing right, the next it drops because I looked at a store credit card from across the room. Maybe I should just stop checking it altogether and let it live its own life. But then I'd probably miss the thrill of seeing it go up for no good reason, you know? Anyone else feel like their score just does whatever it wants?
