Appreciation post: my credit score jumped 60 points after I moved my medical bill off my card
I sat in my kitchen in Toledo one Sunday night and pulled up my score on a whim, and it had dropped to 613 from 670 over about four months. I could not figure out why until I printed the full report and saw a $2,180 hospital bill from an ER visit sitting on a store card at 29% interest, maxed out and dragging my usage to 61%. I called the hospital billing office the next morning, set up a $90 monthly plan with no interest, and paid the card down to $400 over the next ten weeks. By early March my score sat at 673, which was higher than where it started. I still keep that card open but only put gas on it now. Has anyone else had a medical bill quietly wreck their usage without realizing it?
