Spent $40 on a fancy soil thermometer and it broke after two uses
I bought this nice digital soil thermometer thinking it would help me know when to plant my beans, but the probe snapped off the second time I pushed it into my clay-heavy garden bed. Anyone have a cheap manual one that actually holds up in tough soil?

Yeah I mean, "snapped two probes" sounds about right for tough clay. I was reading some gardening blog last week that said manual thermometers with a thick stainless steel stem are way more reliable than the digital ones with those flimsy plastic parts. The@the_keith might have the right idea giving up on fancy ones honestly. My neighbor has a plain old Taylor brand probe that she's had for like five years and it's held up in her rocky soil no problem. Maybe just look for one with a solid metal probe that's at least 6 inches long so it doesn't bend or snap as easy.
