PSA: my neighbor said my compost pile looked like a raccoon buffet, so I finally covered it

The pile behind my garage has been open all summer and I kept finding eggshells and coffee filters dragged 6 feet into the yard. My neighbor Deb walked over in July and said flat out that I was setting out a dinner plate for every critter in the block. So I got a cheap 4x4 pallet lid on it with a couple cinder blocks and stacked the greens and browns in thinner layers instead of one big dump. Three weeks later the pile is actually heating up and the raccoons moved on to somebody else's trash. What are you all using to keep animals out without cooking the pile?
