Check your carrot pH before planting - learned that one the hard way
I dug up 14 carrots that looked like mutant alien fingers last weekend and tested my soil pH at 8.2, which explains why they split and forked instead of growing straight. Has anyone else had a whole batch go ugly just from bad soil chemistry?

I saw a garden blog that said carrots need loose sandy soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8 or they'll do exactly what yours did. Eight point two is way too alkaline for root veg, it messes with how they take up nutrients. Did you add lime or something to the bed before planting?
