New guy on the crew handed me half hitches vs a timber hitch for a light 20 foot pipe lift
Last Tuesday we were setting a 20 foot section of pipe on a small job in Bakersfield, nothing heavy, maybe 800 pounds, and the new guy on the crew asked why I was using two half hitches instead of a timber hitch like he saw on a video. I went back and forth on it for a second because the timber hitch is faster to tie and untie, but on pipe that can roll a little in the sling, I like the half hitches because they clamp down and hold the load straight. I rigged the half hitches, gave him a nod, and the pipe came up clean and level on the first pick with no spin at all. He tied the next one himself and got it done in about 40 seconds, so I figure the lesson stuck. Made me feel good about passing something on to a greenhorn instead of just yelling at him. What do you all run on light pipe lifts, half hitches or a timber hitch?
