I quit trusting the load chart on the wall and started measuring the radius myself
Last month I was setting a 4,200 lb HVAC unit on a roof in Tacoma and the chart on the wall said I was fine at 38 feet. Something felt off so I walked the radius out with a tape and got 43 feet, which put me 900 lbs over for that boom angle. The chart was for the wrong boom length and nobody had caught it in two years of use. Now I keep a paint mark on the deck at my most common radius and check it with a laser measure before every pick over 3,000 lbs. It adds maybe 90 seconds to the job. What do you all do to double check radius when the chart and your gut disagree?
Measuring with a tape every time seems like a lot, but I get the worry. A lot of the older charts get swapped or covered over the years and nobody updates the boom length on the tag, so checking your own mark isn't crazy. I just do the laser from a fixed point on the deck so it takes me 20 seconds, not 90.
