Spent 3 years using the WRONG brush for balayage until a client called me out

I've been doing balayage for about 5 years now and always wondered why my blends looked muddy compared to the classes I took. Last Tuesday a client who is ALSO a stylist asked me why I was using a square brush instead of a V-cut paddle brush. I had NO idea there was even a difference. She showed me her brush and I tried it on her next section and the color payoff was night and day. Now I'm kicking myself for all those hours I spent fighting with the wrong tool. Has anyone else had a basic tool realization that made you feel kinda dumb after?

Honestly I felt this in my soul. I used the wrong剪刀 for like two years until a senior stylist looked at me like I was insane. She just handed me her shears and said try these and it changed everything. Sometimes you just don't know what you dont know until someone shows you. Tbh a good V-cut brush is worth its weight in gold for balayage, I keep a spare in my kit always now.

Oof I used to be the person who thought "a brush is just a brush who cares" but that changed real fast when I finally tried a proper V-cut one. The way it just grabs the hair without pulling or creating those weird harsh lines is honestly wild. Now I get why some stylists get real particular about their tools. It's like trying to paint a room with a crappy roller and wondering why it looks streaky.
