Spent $15k on a forensic accountant for a contract dispute, and I'm torn on if it was worth it.

We had a messy partnership breakup last year, and the other side claimed we owed them over $200k in unpaid profit shares. Our regular lawyer said the financials were a mess and suggested we hire a specialist. The forensic accountant dug through five years of bank records, emails, and old invoices for about three weeks. They found a pattern of double-counted expenses and some payments that were never logged, which cut the claimed amount by more than half. But the bill was huge, and in the end, we settled for about $40k. Part of me thinks we saved over $100k because of their work, but another part wonders if we could have pushed for a better deal without that upfront cost. Has anyone else been in a spot where the expert fee felt almost as painful as the settlement itself?

Wait, they were trying to charge you for payments they never even logged? How does that even happen?

It's a total system failure, plain and simple. Their billing software probably glitched and created phantom charges. I've seen it before where the left hand has no idea what the right hand is doing. You end up having to prove a negative, which is nearly impossible. It's exhausting to fight something that never even existed.
