Vent: A client swore by using a hair dryer on a wet laptop and I thought it was nuts
This guy in Tampa brought in a laptop he spilled coffee on and said his buddy told him to blast it with a hair dryer for 20 minutes. I told him that was a terrible idea and could push moisture deeper or melt something. He did it anyway before coming to me. When I opened it up, the thermal paste under the CPU was completely dried out and cracked, and there was still liquid under a memory module. Had to do a full tear-down and clean with isopropyl anyway. Anyone dealt with a customer who 'fixed' things first and made it worse?

It's like a rule of life now, people would rather trust a random internet hack than listen to someone who does this for a living. Seen it with phones, game consoles, you name it.

Remember reading a forum post where a guy swore by putting a water-logged phone in a bag of rice. The problem is, rice dust gets into the ports and does nothing to stop corrosion. It gives people a false sense of security while the real damage keeps happening inside. I always tell people to just power it off and bring it in right away. That extra day waiting on magic rice is a day the liquid is eating the circuits.
