A $6 USB to SATA cable beat my bench power supply on a dead drive last Friday
Everyone at my shop says a drive that won't spin up means the board is gone, so swap it and move on. Friday a customer brought in a laptop from Cedar Rapids with a WD drive that was clicking and getting no power at all. Instead of the usual board swap I hooked the drive to a $6 USB to SATA cable from my junk drawer and it spun right up, then pulled 40 GB of tax files off it in about an hour. The cable can't push enough current for normal use, but on this drive the low power was just enough to keep it alive long enough to copy. Has anyone else had a cheap adapter save a drive the fancy bench setup couldn't?
