Just realized the little sea monsters on old maps weren't as random as I always assumed
I keep seeing people online say the beasts on 1500s charts were just decoration, but Olaus Magnus put a real whale spout and a real seal shape in his 1539 Carta Marina, so a lot of it was sailors drawing what they'd actually seen (badly). Picked up a 1960s reprint at a shop in Portland last month and the notes in the margin back that up, has anyone else run into a map where the weird stuff turned out to be half true?
