Instructor told me my Python code read like a list of chores, so I started naming things like people
I showed my mentor my first real script, a little tool that sorts my music files, and he said "read it out loud." Every line was like "do this, do that" with names like data2 and tempfile, so I spent two nights renaming stuff to things like old_songs and new_folder and the code finally made sense to me. Do you all name variables the long way or do you keep it short?
I used to be all about short names, like x and tmp, thought long ones were a waste of typing. Then I had to go back to a script I wrote six months earlier and I could not tell what half of it did, which was a real kick in the teeth. Now I write stuff like skipped_tracks and renamed_count and future me actually gets it right away. Yeah it is more keystrokes but you only type it once, you read it a hundred times. Plus when my wife glances at my screen she can kind of follow along now, which is funny.
