That $30 carbide drill bit I swore by, yeah it was the problem
I kept blaming my coolant mix and spindle speed for rough holes in 4140, turns out the bit I bought at that tool show in Dayton was ground wrong from the start. Swapped back to a cheap import and the finish came out clean on the first pass, anyone else had a name brand tool let them down like that?

Did you check the runout on that holder or the collet before you swapped bits? Cause I've seen a bad holder make a brand new name brand drill act exactly like it was ground wrong.
