Hit 10,000 parts on the same insert, was that luck or skill?

Last Thursday I ran a job of 2,500 stainless parts and the same CNMG insert stayed sharp the whole time. That put me at 10,020 parts total on that one corner since I started tracking back in March. My old lead hand says I'm just feeding too light and wasting time, but my finish pass looks clean and I haven't scrapped a part in that batch. Is there a real argument for pushing inserts harder to save cycle time, or is consistency worth more than speed? Any of you guys keep running until failure just to see how far it goes?
